Serials Procedures and Workflows

Serials are cataloged by the Special Materials and Continuing Resources Cataloging Librarian within the Resource Description Services Team (RDS).

Serial publications are issued in successive parts, usually numbered (or with some numbering equivalent), and have no predetermined conclusion. If you are unsure whether something is a serial or not, the Special Materials and Continuing Resources Cataloging Librarian can help make that determination.

Serial records describe the publication as a whole, with the description based on the earliest available issue in hand. Information about subsequent changes is included in various descriptive fields. Serials can be quite gregarious and often have relationships with other serial publications, such as earlier or later titles, supplements, and companion publications.

Print serials need to have holdings statements, stored in the Holdings record in FOLIO.

Electronic serials are managed by MODS. MARC records for electronic serials are provided by EBSCO Holdings Management.

Guidelines for whether a record should be authenticated are found here. We also frequently authenticate records for CONSER projects such as DOAJ (Directory of Open Access Journals).

Holdings information for serials is stored in the FOLIO Holdings record. Holdings statements are entered directly into the FOLIO Holdings record in the Holdings statement field.

Serials receive the same notes as monographs in the Rare Books Collection (RBC). Where necessary, make note of what specific issues the notes refer to.

These loads are currently performed by serials cataloging. [Procedures revised for FOLIO have "FOLIO" before link]
