LGBTQ+ Wikipedia Editing: Research & Sources

Standards for Wikipedia Sources

Sources should be independent of the subject. For example a person's webpage is not an acceptable source. However, often a source for someone being publicly out is not independent of that person, additionally how a person prefers to be described or labelled also often comes directly from that person. Ideally though sources used in Wikipedia are published by reliable, third-party publications known for fact-checking and accuracy such as:

  • Scholarly articles and books
  • University-level textbooks
  • Books published by respected publishing houses
  • Magazines
  • Journals
  • Mainstream newspapers
