One Minute Survey

You may find sources on the Internet or in the library's catalog. No matter where you look, always evaluate a source.

Currency: 

• Is the information published in the right time for your needs?
  • Some topics required current content.
  • Some topics are historical making it appropriate to cite older works.

Reliability:

• Is the information based on fact or opinion?
• Are the claims supported by facts and trustable data?
• Is the information well-balanced, objective, and non-biased? 
• Does the author attribute sources?

Authority:

• Who is the author?
• What is the affiliation of the author?
• What are the credentials?
• What publishing house supports the publication?

Accuracy:

• Is the article/book peer-reviewed?
• Do you see grammatical errors?
• Does it look legitimate?
• Does the author provides contact information?

Purpose: 

• What is the intent of the work?
• What is the domain of a website?
• Who is the target audience?

Para formular preguntas de investigación, es importante considar qué es factible para tí con el tiempo que tienes, tu acceso, y el typo de projecto.

Muchas veces empezamos con una pregunta muy grande. Trata lo siguiente para reducir tu pregunta:

• Piensa en tu interés de investigación
• Reduce la magnitud de la pregunta
• Considera diferentes preguntas
• Manipula la pregunta para reducirla más
• Repite el proceso si es necesario

⇒ La deforestación  = Este tema es muy grande

⇒ La deforestación en la Amazonía  = Este tema sige siendo muy grande

⇒ La tala ilegal como una de las causas de la deforestación de la Amazonía brasilera  = Hemos refinado el tema

Hemos llegado a un buen tema:  Medidas en contra de la tala ilegal como protección de la Amazonía brasilera

• Do not always know who the author is or the authority of a source (including bots and trolls)

• Not every site makes their posts searchable

Elije un tema relacionado al desarrollo sustentable con enfoque en un lugar o región específico en el mundo hispanohablante.  Recuerda, tu tema debe estar dentro de los parámetros que te ha dado la Profesora Becher.

Algunos Parámetros:

• Selecciona por lo menos 10 fuentes de información
• Un mínimo de 5 en español
• Incluye un buen número de fuentes académicas “peer-reviewed” o de gobiernos, organizaciones formales no gubernamentales o de investigación.
• Social media: Información general del internet o de las noticias puede formar parte de la información sobre los debates alrededor de un tema
• 10 páginas mínimo (incluyendo la bibliografía)
• Elije un formato de citas - APA, Chicago, MLA

How do I avoid plagiarism?

• Use your own words
• Provide attribution when paraphrasing
• Provide quotation marks, page number(s) and author's last name when quoting or using the same words of other authors in your in-text citations
