CU Boulder Japanese and Japanese American Community History Project: Other J/JA Archives

Amache, also known as the Granada Relocation Center, near Granada, Colorado was one of ten incarceration sites established by the War Relocation Authority during World War II to unjustly incarcerate Japanese Americans. Over 10,000 people, most American citizens, were incarcerated at Amache from 1942-1945. Amache - a place to reflect, recommit, and further the pursuit of freedom and justice.

The Department of Anthropology at the University of Denver (DU) is engaged in long-term community based research at Amache, the site of a World War II Japanese American incarceration camp in Colorado. Note: The DU site for the project no longer exists, the link will take you to the Facebook Group for the project.

The collection spans 1860-2012 and primarily documents Bill Hosokawa’s post-World War II career working as a journalist, author, and diplomat in Denver, Colorado. Correspondence, memos, meeting minutes, research files, article and speech drafts, and book manuscripts compose the bulk of the collection and detail Hosokawa’s lifelong work to inform a wider audience about Japanese American history and culture.

Published in 1951, The Hokubei Mainichi Yearbook, attempts to gather the contact information for all Americans of Japanese descent, and their businesses. Denver Public Library has set aside 28 pages covering Colorado.

History Colorado is the State's official agency tasked with recording its history. They hold a variety of collections including the history of Japanese-Americans in the State.

Started April 5th, 1962 as the Rocky Mountain Journal, and changed to Rocky Mountain Jihō (時報) on June 13th, 1962. The Colorado Virtual Library has an article on the paper's history.

Kimiko “Kim” Side (1922–2023) and her husband settled in Denver and established businesses connecting Japanese and American communities. Beyond her entrepreneurial work, she played a central role in cultural exchange, leading the Denver-Takayama Sister City program, supporting Japanese American civic organizations, and teaching traditional crafts. Her contributions earned numerous awards, including the Japanese government’s Order of the Rising Sun, marking her as a key figure in fostering Japanese American identity and international understanding.

Densho documents the testimonies of Japanese Americans who were unjustly incarcerated during World War II before their memories are extinguished. We offer these irreplaceable firsthand accounts, coupled with historical images and teacher resources, to explore principles of democracy and promote equal justice for all.

Discover Nikkei is a community website about Nikkei (Japanese American) identity, culture, and history. The goal of this project is to provide an inviting space for the community to share, explore, and connect with each other through diverse Nikkei stories, experiences, and perspectives.

Produced by the Japanese-Americans interned at assembly centers and relocation centers around the country during World War II, these newspapers provide a unique look into the daily lives of the people who were held in these camps. They include articles written in English and Japanese, typed, handwritten and drawn. They advertise community events, provide logistical information about the camps and relocation, report on news from the community, and include editorials.

The national repository of Japanese American history. The museum creates historical and art exhibitions, educational public programs, documentaries, and curricula that illuminate the stories and cultural heritage of people of Japanese ancestry in the United States. The museum speaks out when diversity, individual dignity and social justice are undermined, vigilantly sharing the hard-fought lessons accrued from this history.
