SPAN 3050 Spanish Phonology and Phonetics: Home

Welcome

The Spanish Phonology and Phonetics guide offers resources that will help you with your final project, where you will focus on a topic of linguistic variation and prepare a presentation individually or in groups of 2 and 3 people.

Topics for Consideration:

  1. Armonía vocálica
  2. Vocales caedizas
  3. La velarización y elisión de /n/
  4. El yeísmo rehilado
  5. El lleísmo
  6. La neutralización de la vibrante /ɾ/
  7. La fricatización de la /ɾ/ y la /r/
  8. El seseo y el ceceo
  9. La [s̺] apical y la distinción
  10. La eliminación de la /d/ intervocálica y de consonantes en posición final de palabra
  11. La hipercorrección (específicamente con la /-d-/ intervocálica y la /a-/ átona en posición inicial de palabra)
  12. La aspiración y la elisión (o pérdida) de la /-s/
  13. Los factores sociales que favorecen la aspiración y la elisión de la /-s/
  14. Las articulaciones variadas de la /x/
  15. Los préstamos y el cambio de código

Your Project will need to:

  • Describe the phenomenon using linguistic terminology we have learned in class (e.g., posición silábica, modo y punto de articulación, realización alofónica, etc.)
  • Provide transcribed, visual, and audio examples
  • Describe which speakers tend to display this phenomenon (e.g., which varieties of Spanish, are there social-contextual factors that correspond to its usage)
  • Include social perceptions about the phenomenon described (e.g., How are speakers who use this phenomenon perceived? Is it a prestigious or stigmatized variant/phenomenon? Are speakers discriminated against for speaking this way? Why?)
  • Include at least 3 different references in APA (one of them may be your textbook. The other references should be academic and/or reliable popular resources).
