Have you ever heard this term before?
Maybe you haven't.
Maybe your eyes just glazed over in boredom, or confusion.
Don't click away! Give us a minute to convince you that government information can be helpful, interesting, and sometimes even funny.
This is government information:
Census bureau data about the state of Colorado, presented in a manner simple to read at a glance.
---
But, so is this:
An instructional guide from the New York public school system, originally published in 1900, that offers elementary school teachers advice and activities to help teach their students American history, and instill in them a sense of pride in their country.
---
And, so is this:
A graphic guide for military servicemembers, offering basic maintenance advice, as well as highly specialized instructions on the use and maintenance of new equipment. Famed American comics creator Will Eisner was the magazine's artistic director from its inception, for over 20 years.
---
And this, too!
An instructional publication for elementary school teachers in Colorado, to assist in teaching the various holidays celebrated in the state of Colorado (including Good Roads Day, which was celebrated on May 10th in 1915).
---
As American citizens, these publications and data are ours (paid for by our tax dollars), and should be freely accessible to us all. Generations of public employees and librarians have worked to realize this goal, and continue the work today! The Federal Depository Library Program's (FDLP) mission is to provide free, permanent public access to federal government information, in the present and the future, and that Title 44 of the U.S. Code addresses the duties and responsibilities of the Government Publishing Office (GPO).
