The Cockerell Nature Films

An introduction and guide to the digitized Cockerell nature films from the CU Boulder Libraries Archives.

Introduction

Some of the films in the Cockerells' collection highlight Colorado, Boulder, and the University of Colorado. Four show mountaineering in the Front Range (mostly Indian Peaks and Longs Peak), while others show shots around Boulder and CU Boulder's campus.

Colorado Mountaineering Films

The Cockerell Collection includes multiple hand-edited films of CU Boulder students hiking in the front range, including up Longs Peak in Rocky Mountain National Park, in Indian Peaks Wilderness, and in the Flatirons above Boulder. Most of the footage was filmed in the late 1930s or early 1940s.
