BIPOC Authors on Nature, Environmental Justice Booklist: Home

This guide gathers non-fiction, poetry, and children's books written by Black, indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) on human interdependence with nature, conservation, and the natural world.

Nature Book list

Welcome! This list is a starting place for exploring writing by Black people, indigenous people, and People of Color that reflects relationships with the natural world and environmental justice. Long excluded from the Eurocentric outdoor movement and the genre of nature writing, these authors explore place, spirituality, ecology, and discrimination in outdoor spaces. For a great discussion of the growth in publishing in this area, check out this Los Angeles Review of Books piece by Catherine K. Buni, "Towards a Wider View of Nature Writing." Ecocriticism is also being applied as a lens to literature that blurs boundaries of "nature writing."
