For this final project, you’re required to select a scientific research article based on a clinical nutrition topic (a condition or disease that is caused, managed, and/or treated at least in part by nutrition, such as diabetes or Crohn disease). The article must be an original research article (not a review article) related to clinical nutrition and that is published in a reputable scientific journal.
The video How to Tell An Original Research Article from a Review Article (LSU Libraries; 5 mins) will help you distinguish research articles from review articles.
Professor Stob notes the following as examples of relevant, reputable scientific journals. Note that these journals may contain multiple types of articles and not only research articles.
While CU Boulder access to these journal examples is linked here, you may find it easier to use a topical, journal-specific search for research articles published in these journals by using the Libraries’ One Search – Advanced Search or the Web of Science database.

As you browse your search results, you’ll want to consider the characteristics of research articles as compared to review articles. Be sure to select a research article to use for your final project.
Research articles report the results of original research studies that contribute to knowledge about a topic. Research articles are generally organized into sections such as abstract, introduction, methods, results, discussion/conclusion, and references.
Here’s an example of a research article published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition:
Whelan, K., Murrells, T., Morgan, M., Cummings, F., Stansfield, C., Todd, A., Sebastian, S., Lobo, A., Lomer, M. C., Lindsay, J. O., & Czuber-Dochan, W. (2021). Food-related quality of life is impaired in inflammatory bowel disease and associated with reduced intake of key nutrients. The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 113(4), 832–844. https://doi.org/10.1093/ajcn/nqaa395
In contrast, review articles report the results of multiple research studies while summarizing research and knowledge about a topic. These articles help readers understand the state of knowledge about a topic, and what knowledge (what research) is still needed.
Here’s an example of a review article published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Remember, you need a research article, not a review article, for your final project.
Riordan, A. M., Ruxton, C. H. S., & Hunter, J. O. (1998). A review of associations between Crohn’s disease and consumption of sugars. European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 52(4), 229–238. https://doi.org/10.1038/sj.ejcn.1600556
