Fundamentals of Engineering Mechanical Exam: Home

Overview

The Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Exam is required for certification as an Engineer in Training (EIT), which is the first step towards being certified as a Professional Engineer (PE). The Exam is administered by NCEES (National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying), with certification through the State of Colorado Division of Professions and Occupations. (NOTE: Students who are moving to a different state can generally transfer their certification, by following instructions provide by their state's Division of Professions and Occupations.)

EIT and PE certification are required for careers in some fields, most frequently those involving human safety issues. The certification serves as a national standard indicating that a consistent level of proficiency in engineering fundamentals has been achieved.

Study Advice

Strategize! 

  • Look at the number of problems in a given area
  • Work hardest on the most critical areas and those you feel that you can master. 
  • Don't try to study everything in one night --make a plan for studying.

Look through the equation book. 

  • Be familiar with what is in it and what the equations mean! 
  • If an equation looks totally foreign, seek guidance on that concept from a classmate or professor.

Focus on fundamental concepts. 

  • Don't worry about a very specific case or obscure equation. You are unlikely to get that problem. 
  • Often the obscure cases are the most straightforward because the equations are very specific.
