Children's Literature: Awards

Awarded every two years by the American Indian Library Association (an ALA Affiliate). "Books selected to receive the award will present American Indians in the fullness of their humanity in the present and past contexts."

Awarded by the Asia/Pacific American Librarians Association (an ALA Affiliate). "The goal of the Asian/Pacific American Award for Literature is to honor and recognize individual work about Asian/Pacific Americans and their heritage, based on literary and artistic merit."

Awarded by the ALA's Association of Library Services to Children. "The Batchelder Award is given to the most outstanding children’s book originally published in a language other than English in a country other than the United States, and subsequently translated into English for publication in the United States."

Awarded by the ALA's Association of Library Services to Children. "The Caldecott Medal was named in honor of nineteenth-century English illustrator Randolph Caldecott. It is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children." The first Caldecott medal was awarded in 1938.

Awarded by Colorado Humanities. This award highlights books by Colorado Authors. "Colorado Humanities inspires the people of Colorado to explore ideas and to appreciate our diverse cultural heritage."

Awarded by the ALA's Ethnic & Multicultural Information Exchange Round Table. "The Coretta Scott King Book Awards are given annually to outstanding African American authors and illustrators of books for children and young adults that demonstrate an appreciation of African American culture and universal human values. The award commemorates the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and honors his wife, Mrs. Coretta Scott King, for her courage and determination to continue the work for peace and world brotherhood."

Awarded by the Council for Exceptional Children's Division on Autism and Developmental Disabilities, in collaboration with Special Needs Project. "The Dolly Gray Children’s Literature Award was initiated in 2000 to recognize authors, illustrators, and publishers of high quality fictional and biographical children, intermediate, and young adult books that appropriately portray individuals with developmental disabilities."

Awarded by the ALA's Association of Library Services to Children. "The Geisel Award is given annually to the author(s) and illustrator(s) of the most distinguished American book for beginning readers published in English in the United States during the preceding year."

Awarded by the ALA's Association of Library Services to Children. "The Newbery Medal was named for eighteenth-century British bookseller John Newbery. It is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children." The first Newbery medal was awarded in 1922.

Award by the ALA's Association of Library Services to Children. "The award is named after Pura Belpré, the first Latina librarian at the New York Public Library. The Pura Belpré Award, established in 1996, is presented annually to a Latino/Latina writer and illustrator whose work best portrays, affirms, and celebrates the Latino cultural experience in an outstanding work of literature for children and youth."

Awarded by the American Library Association's Committee of the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Round Table. "Rainbow Book List presents an annual bibliography of quality books with significant and authentic GLBTQ content, which are recommended for people from birth through eighteen years of age."

Awarded by the ALA's Association of Library Services to Children. "The Robert F. Sibert Informational Book Medal is awarded annually to the author(s) and illustrator(s) of the most distinguished informational book published in the United States in English during the preceding year. The award is named in honor of Robert F. Sibert, the long-time President of Bound to Stay Bound Books, Inc. of Jacksonville, Illinois."

Awarded by the ALA's Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Round Table. "The first and most enduring award for GLBT books is the Stonewall Book Awards, sponsored by the American Library Association's Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Round Table. Since Isabel Miller's Patience and Sarah received the first award in 1971, many other books have been honored for exceptional merit relating to the gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgender experience."

Awarded by the Association of Jewish Libraries (an ALA Affiliate). "The Sydney Taylor Book Award is presented annually to outstanding books for children and teens that authentically portray the Jewish experience. Presented by the Association of Jewish Libraries since 1968, the award encourages the publication and widespread use of quality Judaic literature."
