Search Strategy

Think before you search! No matter which search tool you use (databases, Google, etc.), it always helps to have a search strategy. A little planning at the beginning of your research process will save time.

Think of alternative terms, here are a few examples

  • Undergraduates
    • broader = college students, students, university students, etc.
    • narrower = freshmen, sophomore, junior, senior, etc.
  • Race
    • alternative terms = racial, ethnicity, nationality, etc.
    • narrower = white, black, Chicano, Hispanic, African-American, etc.

Combining Keywords

AND  link words by AND to search for all words in the same resource

OR  link words by OR to search for one word or another (instead of both/all words)

NOT  to eliminate results with a certain term

“Quotations” – add quotations to a group of two or more words to search for the exact phrase.  In Lexis Nexis you do not need to use "" around phrases.  The database assumes words typed together without connectors are phrases.
