While Carmen de Burgos (Almer a 1867-Madrid 1932) belonged to the Generation of '98 in terms of her age, she is really too modern and progressive a figure for this categorization. A journalist, author, translator and progressive feminist intellectual, de Burgos was one of the most widely-read writers of her time. When she died she left a body of work impressive both in its quantity and quality: 12 full length and approximately 57 short novels. "La rampa" (1917) is the second full-length novel by Carmen de Burgos, and is dedicated to all of the throngs of wounded and lost women who have come to me asking which path they should take, and who have made me feel their tragedy. The Spanish literary canon would remain incomplete if it did not include this urban novel by Carmen de Burgos, that in a highly original female point of view, captures Madrid in the process of modernization. "La rampa" narrates how modernity brought new possibilities for some middle- and upper-class women, but was ultimately an empty promise for many working-class women living in the city. This critical edition prepared by Susan Larson is accompanied by commentary, an extensive bibliography of works by and about the author, and an introduction that includes biographical information about Carmen de Burgos as well as an urban history of Madrid between 1890 and 1920 meant to frame the work within its urban context.

This collection of essays confirms Carmen de Burgos's pivotal place in Spanish feminist history by bringing together eminent international scholars who offer new readings of Burgos's work. It includes the analyses of a number of lesser-known texts, both fictional and non-fictional, which give us a more comprehensive examination of Burgos's multipronge feminist approach. Burgos's works, especially her essays, are essential feminist reading and complement other European and North American traditions. Gaining familiarity with the breadth and depth of her work serves not only to provide an understanding of Spanish firstwave feminism, but also enriches our appreciation of cultural studies, gender studies, subaltern studies and travel literature. Looking at the entirety of her life and work, and the wide-ranging contributions in this volume, it is evident that Burgos embodied the tensions between tradition and modernity, depicting multiple representations of womanhood. Encouraging women to take ownership of their personal fashion, the design of their homes and the decorum of their families were steps towards recognizing a female population that was cognizant of its own desires.

This study in the interdisciplinary field of law and literature analyses the representation of law in the work of twentieth-century Spanish writer Carmen de Burgos (1867-1932). Drawing on Anglo-American legal theory and Spanish historical practice, it argues that her narratives of legal critique were used as a means of political propaganda, in which she introduced the question of women's rights into the public domain. John Guillory challenges the most fundamental premises of the canon debate by resituating the problem of canon formation in an entirely new theoretical framework. The result is a book that promises to recast not only the debate about the literary curriculum but also the controversy over "multiculturalism" and the current "crisis of the humanities." Employing concepts drawn from Pierre Bourdieu's sociology, Guillory argues that canon formation must be understood less as a question of the representation of social groups than as a question of the distribution of "cultural capital" in the schools, which regulate access to literacy, to the practices of reading and writing.
