Citing AI

Follow your instructor's guidelines on the use of AI tools to complete work in their class.

When you use ChatGPT or another AI tool, keep a record of your chats and interactions so that you can acknowledge how use of AI contributed to your work.

Treat text generated by AI as you would quotations from another writer, and cite the tool when you reproduce the words in your paper.

Citing ChatGPT & other AI in APA Style

For example, depending on your use of the AI tool and type of paper, you might: write about how you used the tool in the introduction or methods section of your paper, cite it in your references, and include the exact text of your chat in the body of your paper or appendices.

Electronic books are cited exactly as their print counterparts with the addition of a media marker at the end of the citation: Kindle edition, PDF e-book, Microsoft Reader e-book, Palm e-book, CD-ROM, etc. Books consulted online are also cited exactly as their print counterparts with the addition of a DOI (or URL) at the end of the citation. Stable page numbers are not always available in electronic formats; therefore, you may, instead, include the number of chapter, section, or other easily recognizable locator.
