Search Tips

To find peer-reviewed journal articles: look for a checkbox or filter to select "peer-reviewed journals". Why filter your search? The databases linked below often also include letters to the editor, personal essays, newspaper and magazine articles, reports, working papers, dissertations and conference proceedings.

Supplement peer-reviewed articles: those other resources can complement peer-reviewed articles and help broaden your perspective on your topic:

  • Current: for scholarly work, conference proceedings are a good place to look for preliminary research presented by authors who will then publish a peer-reviewed article on the same topic 1-2 years later; dissertations, while the culmination of years of work, are often written by authors exploring new and emerging topics. Newspaper and magazine articles reflecting current events have a turnaround time
  • Voice: letters to the editor and personal essays may show a different tone or perspective, or be authored by people under-represented or mis-represented in other media
  • Audience: journal articles are written to be read in academia. Reports and working papers are often written to be read by professionals in industry or non-profit. They can offer a different perspective on a topic.
