Social Explorer, Exercise 1:

After creating your login, choose Create New > Map

  1. Choose Boulder County as the geography

  2. Under Change Data choose 2018 American Community Survey and House Value as the category. 

  3. Scroll down to House Value for All Owner-Occupied Housing Units - Cumulative 

  4. Multi-select: More than $1,000,000, More than $750,000, More than $500,000, More than $300,000, More than $150,000

  5. Choose Dot Density if it isn’t selected by default

  6. Woohoo, you have a map!

Social Explorer Tips

  • Google doc handout of suggested Social Explorer data for variables in Observing the Local assignment
  • Use a known address to quickly find census tract number
  • Can change geographic scope for some years from census tracts to School Districts (UNSD - Unified School District, SCSD - Secondary School District, ELSD - Elementary School District)
  • Can mask your map data to identify a neighborhood whose boundaries don't fit the census tracts

Combine Search Words

AND  link words by AND to search for all words in the same resource

OR  link words by OR to search for one word or another (instead of both/all words)

NOT  to eliminate results with a certain term

“Quotations” – add quotations to a group of two or more words to search for the exact phrase

Begin from the libraries homepage. Click on a library database or resource, follow the log-in screen instructions.
