What is a citation management tool?
Citation management tools help you keep track of your literature research and make it easier to write well-cited papers, from your earliest explorations to automatically generating citations for you as you write! At the libraries, we can meet with you and discuss what options might work best for you, how to get started, and help troubleshoot any difficulties you encounter, but you can also get started on your investigating some of the options below, which are free and which we find especially useful in the sciences (or explore even more options on our guide to citation managers).
Zotero is a free, open source web-based citation management tool that allows you to collaborate with others and works well with a variety of file formats (e.g. PDFs, HTML files, JPGs). Self-guided instructions in the form of tutorials, FAQ, and help are available here.
