The theme of this year’s event is “Let Freedom Read!”
Each September since 1982, libraries have defended access to diverse information by drawing attention to threats against the right to read. The University of Colorado Boulder Libraries join other publishers, booksellers, libraries and schools in recognizing Banned Books Week. Banned Books Week brings together the entire book community in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular. Join our fight for the right to read!
The next Banned Books Week will be October 1 - 7, 2023!
"Each year, the ALA's Office for Intellectual Freedom records hundreds of attempts by individuals and groups to have books removed from libraries shelves and from classrooms. See Frequently Challenged Books for more details.
According to the Office for Intellectual Freedom, at least 46 of the Radcliffe Publishing Course Top 100 Novels of the 20th Century have been the target of ban attempts.
The titles below represent banned or challenged books on that list (see the entire Radcliffe Publishing Course list here). For more information on why these books were challenged, visit challenged classics and the Banned Books Week Web site."
